2018-2019 Designer of the Year: Individual Impact

Winner: Barbara Owens, Owens Interiors at Home, Texas

The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is an agency dedicated to providing hope and healing to children of abuse. The agency collaborates with  professionals in investigation, prosecution and treatment of child sexual and physical abuse. Barbara Owen's background in therapy gave her great insight into the use of color for healing and spacial and interactive therapies. Built in the 1960's, this home was donated by one of its benefactors. The remodel was to be done completely on donations and charity.  The design concept was to create as pleasant an environment as possible for the children or families being brought in for investigation or therapy.

A series of 4 pops of color are repeated throughout the house. Interactive features throughout were carefully created to distract and engage. A bright mural custom painted by a local artist is filled with hidden images for children to search for while waiting. The ceiling above is lined with colorful paper flying cranes made by a local Girl Scout group.

The CAC provides a safe friendly environment where law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical and mental health professionals collaborate within the local community to develop strategies to seek justice and promote healing for victims of child abuse.

The IMPACT and benefits this agency has on this community cannot be measured. Its use of so many resources in the community reaches out and touches the lives of those that are being helped by this program and by those helping.
